Since 1905 Trelleborg has become a trusted leader in the marine and infrastructure markets specialising in premium, polymer and smart technology solutions. With an extensive number of offices and manufacturing facilities across the globe they are looking to make a huge emissions improvement and make their contribution to protecting the environment.
One of their UK offices located in Westbury, Wiltshire, which is also conveniently located nearby to SCES HQ, sought to improve their energy efficiency and workplace comfort, by upgrading the lighting used throughout the large number of offices, corridors, warehouse and ground floor toilets.
The general office building had originally been fitted with a large number of recessed modular steel panels housing 4 fluorescent tubes per light. These have always served a purpose and easily integrated into the ceiling grids which span the premises. Whilst these lights are most common in commercial offices, schools, hospitals and retail spaces, they are unfortunately prone to flickering, dimming and uneven light distribution.
Trelleborg wanted to reduce the energy consumption and operational costs of the lighting so discussed with Pete and Andy the options they had for making changes. In order to align with their sustainability goals and carbon footprint, LED panel lights were the most beneficial and cost effective choice for them.
Following inspection by SturmanCraigs qualified electricians, they replaced 135 steel panels with 4 tubes per fitting, 7 twin tube lights, 1 light baton and 5 round bulkhead lights. The use of different light fittings were dependent on the location in the property.
The two main benefits for updating and upgrading the lighting are hugely beneficial:
Maintenance: All of the light fittings used are now low maintenance without the need to keep changing individual components. This reduces the spend on materials and labour throughout the year.
Electrical consumption: The reduction in wattage means less electricity used, saving money whilst helping the environment. See below the full reduction made from carrying out these changes:
- Old fluorescent tubes: 18 watts per tube, 4 tubes per fitting = 72 watts per light fitting.
- New LED panels: 22 watts per panel.
- Savings: 52 watts x 135 = 7,020 watts.
- Old fluorescent twin tubes: 70 watts per tube, 2 tubes per fitting = 140 watts per light fitting.
- New LED twin lights: 63 watts per fitting.
- Savings: 77 watts x 7 = 539 watts.
- Old light baton: 58 watts per tube, 2 tubes per fitting = 116 watts per fitting.
- New LED baton: 63 watts per fitting.
- Savings: 53 watts x 1 = 53 watts.
- Old round bulkhead: 28 watts per fitting.
- New round bulkhead: 14 watts per fitting.
- Savings: 14 watts x 5 = 70 watts.
Previous watts used: 10.956 kW (10,956 watts)
New usage: 3.544 kW (3,544 watts)
Total watts saved: 7.682 kW (7,682 watts)
Price per kW: 26.9p/kW/hour (approximate price as of October 2025).
Total £ saved per hour: £2.07
£4,750.65 per year saved (based on 9 hours/day, 5 days/week, 51 weeks/year).

The benefits of getting the right lighting in a space:
Boosts productivity and mood: Natural or brighter light improves focus and reduces fatigue, while warm lighting provokes relaxation.
Enhances aesthetics: Strategic lighting highlights architectural features, image, texture and colours. Lighting can create an atmosphere tailored to the room design.
Improves safety and functionality: Well-lit areas reduce accidents and make tasks easier. It can also emphasise key elements or safety features.
Getting a qualified electrician to fit lighting ensures that it will all be working safely, from the disconnect of old fittings to the new connections, everything needs fully testing and compliant with regulations.
Manufacturers warranties are available for any light fittings purchased through SturmanCraig Electrical Ltd.
